RULES AND REGULATIONS FOR THE GENERAL SURGERY COURSE

held at the Department and Clinic of Gastrointestinal Surgery

Faculty of Medical Sciences, Katowice

in the 2026/2027 academic year

Classes for the course  ‘General Surgery’  are conducted in accordance with the Study Regulations of the Medical University of Silesia in Katowice, constituting Annex No. 1 to Resolution No. 49/2025 of the SUM Senate dated 16 July 2025, and these Regulations.

Rules for participation in classes

1. Teaching sessions (lectures, seminars, practical sessions) take place in accordance

with the timetable set by the Dean.

2. In the case of classes delivered remotely, the Head of the Unit may change the date of the class – information regarding the date and the platform used is published on the Unit’s website www.kchpp.sum.edu.pl
3. Attendance at all forms of classes (lectures, seminars and tutorials) is compulsory.
4. Students are required to attend classes with the student group to which they have been assigned for the given academic year.
5. Students are required to arrive on time for face-to-face classes and to log in to the e-learning system on time for classes delivered using distance learning techniques and methods.
6. Students are required to prepare for classes in theory in accordance

with the planned topics, based on the specified reading list. Failure to prepare for classes will result in a fail.

7. During classes held at the University, students are required to:

- maintain medical confidentiality and protect personal data in accordance with the GDPR,

- comply with the terms of the oath and the regulations in force at SUM,

and in particular to respect the dignity of all participants in the teaching process and to uphold the University’s reputation,

- comply with health and safety regulations,

- behaving quietly and calmly, given that the premises are occupied by patients,

- using personal protective equipment in accordance with the Unit’s guidelines (PLEASE NOTE: you must not leave the hospital building whilst wearing a doctor’s uniform).

8. Students should take care of the classroom, including keeping it tidy and ensuring the equipment they use is in good working order. Any faults noticed should be reported to the academic staff member leading the class. Students are liable for any wilful damage caused to the University’s property.
9. Students should not eat meals or bring unnecessary personal belongings into the classroom.
10. Before classes begin, students should change into their medical uniforms and leave their clothing, outerwear, bags and rucksacks in the cloakroom.
11. During teaching sessions and final assessments for a Student’s course, it is strictly forbidden to bring in or use electronic devices or to make audio-visual recordings (this applies within the UCK premises).
12. Some teaching sessions take place in the operating theatre. Before entering the operating theatre, it is mandatory to do the following in the airlock:

- change into your scrubs,

- put on a cap, face mask and shoe covers,

- remove any jewellery (staff are not responsible for items left in the airlock or in your scrubs),

- disinfect your hands.

You must not leave the hospital premises whilst wearing clothing intended for use in the operating theatre.

13. All teaching materials are protected by copyright as intellectual property. Any infringement of copyright or image rights (recording, photographing, copying, filming) will result in disciplinary proceedings being initiated.
14. Students exhibiting symptoms suggestive of an infection, including a viral infection (i.e. temperature >37°C, cough, shortness of breath, sore throat, runny nose, loss of smell/taste, headache, general malaise, weakness, etc.), must not attend classes held at the University.
15. Pregnant students should inform the lecturer in charge of the course (there is a risk of exposure to magnetic fields and pathogens).

Consultations

Students wishing to arrange a consultation should inform the secretariat of the subject of the consultation.

The date and the lecturer with the most experience in the subject in question will be proposed by the Head of Department or the Tutorial Leader.

Rules on justifying absences from classes and making up missed work

1. Any absence from classes must be justified by presenting the relevant document (medical certificate, court order, etc.) to the lecturer immediately, or within 5 working days of the reason for the absence ceasing to apply.
2. Excuses for absence from classes are dealt with in accordance with Article 15 of the SUM Study Regulations.
3. Missed classes should be made up with another seminar group. The student sets the date themselves in consultation with the group representative. There should be no more than 2 people in excess of the planned number of students.
4. Regardless of the reason, in the event of any absence from classes, the student is obliged to undergo an assessment of the learning outcomes achieved, in accordance with the rules and within the timeframes set by the Head of the Unit or a person authorised by them.

Any disputes not covered by these regulations shall be resolved in accordance with the current Study Regulations of the Medical University of Silesia in Katowice.
