a/ in case of injury or accidental needle stick injury:
- the site should be thoroughly washed with warm water and soap;
- try not to stop bleeding, better if bleeding is stimulated,
- disinfect the wound with 3% peroxide or alcohol solution (sterile hand sanitizer)
- put a sterile dressing (best if water-proof)
b/ should skin be contaminated with blood or other potentially infectious materials (OPIM):
- the contaminating material should be removed from the skin surface with a gauze swab or other pad soaked with sterile hand sanitizer,
- wash the exposed site and disinfect with a sterile sanitizer.
c/ if blood or OPIM get into the eyes:
- rinse and wash the eyes with sterile physiological saline or with plain water keeping the eyelids open.
d/ if blood or OPIM get into the mouths:
- wash out the infectious material,
- wash the mouth a dozen or so times,
- seek immediate medical assistance to evaluate the infection risk and implement the post-exposure procedure.
