SAFETY REGULATIONS

  1. The head of the classes or an assistant in charge should be immediately notified of  any threatening occurrence named below.
  1. Procedures requiring the use of potentially infectious material demand the individual protection means: a gown and disposable gloves or a mask (if face may be exposed).
  1. Any injuries must be protected with a dressing.
  1. A dirty gown must be immediately replaced with a clean scrub
  1. Used gloves should be disposed of properly into the indicated waste basket.
  1. Beware of injuries and do not expose others to the risk of injury (the needles, scalpels and glass must be disposed of properly into the indicated waste

a/   in case of injury or accidental needle stick injury:

 - the site should be thoroughly washed with warm water and soap;

- try not to stop bleeding, better if bleeding is stimulated,

- disinfect the wound with 3% peroxide or alcohol solution (sterile hand sanitizer)

- put a sterile dressing (best if water-proof)

b/  should skin be contaminated with blood or other potentially infectious materials (OPIM):

- the contaminating material should be removed from the skin surface with a gauze swab or other pad soaked with sterile hand sanitizer,

- wash the exposed site and disinfect with a sterile sanitizer.

c/ if blood or OPIM get into the eyes:

- rinse and wash the eyes with sterile physiological saline or with plain water keeping the eyelids open.

d/ if blood or OPIM get into the mouths:

- wash out the infectious material,

- wash the mouth a dozen or so times,

- seek immediate medical assistance to evaluate the infection risk and implement the post-exposure procedure.

  1. Preventive measures at the operating suite
  • A student must not enter the operating suite if showing manifestations of acute infection,
  • Pregnant students should notify of the condition before entering the suite to prevent any exposure to the electromagnetic field (e.g. diathermy machine, X-ray)
  • When at the operating suite, students should observe the rules of aseptic practices, recommended by the assistants and nurses.
  • The students must not leave the operating suite wearing the surgical scrubs.
