RULES AND REGULATIONS FOR CLASSES IN GENERAL SURGERY
conducted at the Department and Clinic of Gastrointestinal Surgery

in the academic year 2025/2026

Classes in the subject ‘General Surgery’ are conducted on the basis of the Regulations of the Medical University of Silesia in Katowice, constituting Appendix No. 1 to Resolution No. 37/2024 of the SUM Senate of 18 June 2024, and these Regulations.
Rules for participation in classes
- Teaching activities (lectures, seminars, practical classes) are held in accordance with
the schedule set by the Dean.
- In the case of classes conducted remotely, the Head of the Unit may change the date of the classes - information about the date and the platform used is announced on the Unit's website www.kchpp.sum.edu.pl
- Participation in all forms of classes (lectures, seminars and exercises) is compulsory.
- Students are required to participate in classes with the student group to which they have been assigned for a given academic year.
- Students are required to arrive on time for classes conducted in a stationary form and to log into the e-learning system on time in the case of classes conducted using distance learning techniques and methods.
- Students are required to prepare for classes in accordance with
the planned topics based on the provided reading list. Failure to prepare for classes will result in a failing grade.
- During classes held at the University, students are required to:
- maintain medical confidentiality and protect personal data in accordance with the GDPR
- comply with the content of the oath and the regulations in force at SUM,
and in particular to respect the dignity of all participants in the teaching process and to care for the good name of the University
- compliance with health and safety rules
- quiet and calm behaviour due to the presence of sick people
- use of personal protective equipment in accordance with the Unit's guidelines (REMINDER: it is forbidden to leave the hospital building in a medical uniform).
- Students should take care of the place where classes are held, including keeping it tidy and ensuring that the equipment they use is in good working order. Any faults noticed should be reported to the academic teacher conducting the classes. Students are responsible for any deliberate damage caused to the University's property.
- Students should not eat meals or bring unnecessary personal items to the place where classes are held.
- Before classes, students should change into their medical uniforms and leave their clothes, outerwear, bags and backpacks in the cloakroom.
- During classes and final examinations, students are strictly prohibited from bringing in and using electronic devices and audiovisual recording equipment (this applies to the entire UCK premises).
- Some of the classes are conducted in the operating theatre. Before entering the operating theatre, it is mandatory to:
- change into a uniform
- put on a cap, mask and shoe covers
- remove jewellery (operating theatre staff are not responsible for items left in the airlock or uniform)
- disinfect your hands
You are not allowed to leave the hospital premises in clothing intended for the operating theatre.
- All teaching materials are protected by copyright in terms of intellectual property. Violation of copyright and image protection rights (recording, photographing, copying, registering) will result in disciplinary proceedings.
- Students who have symptoms suggestive of infection, including viral infection (i.e. temperature >37°C, cough, shortness of breath, sore throat, nasal discharge, smell/taste disorders, headache, general malaise, weakness, etc.) may not participate in classes at the University.
- Pregnant students should inform the teacher conducting the classes (there is a possibility of exposure to magnetic fields and pathogens).

Consultations
Students who wish to obtain a consultation should inform the secretariat about the subject of the consultation.
The date and the teacher with the most experience in the given subject will be proposed by the Head of the Department or the Head of Exercises.
Rules for excusing absences from classes and making them up
- Each absence from class must be excused by presenting the teacher with the appropriate document (medical certificate, court certificate, etc.) immediately or within 5 working days after the reason for the absence has ceased to exist.
- Justification of absence from classes is carried out in accordance with 15 of the SUM Study Regulations.
- Missed classes should be made up with another exercise group on a date agreed with the Head of the Unit or a person authorised by him (there should be no more than 2 people above the planned number of students).
- Regardless of the reason, in the event of any absence from classes, the Student is required to undergo verification of the learning outcomes achieved in accordance with the rules and deadlines set by the Head of the Unit or a person authorised by him.
Any disputes not covered by these regulations shall be resolved in accordance with the applicable Study Regulations of the Medical University of Silesia in Katowice.
